Today’s featured webcam shows the beautiful bay and port of the city Split in Croatia. The city is a popular tourist destination, with its Mediterranean climate giving the city hot, dry summers and mild winters. It also has many famous landmarks, including Saint Dommios Cathedral, the Riva Harbour, and Diocletian’s Palace.
The city is centred around the Diocletian’s Palace, which was built by the Roman emperor Diocletian in 305 AD. This makes the city one of the oldest in the area, with it being at least 1,700 years old, and possibly having been home to a Greek colony as far as 6th century BC.
The centre of Split was named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, with the city considered to be one of the centres of Croatian culture. It has a literary tradition that goes all the way back to medieval times, and has produced many influential musicians in recent times.
