Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Gateshead and Sunderland are the best known cities in this industrial north-east area. Situated around the mouths of the Rivers Tyne and Wear it was once a great shipbuilding area. Nowadays it attracts visitors to see the Angel of the North sculpture, Hadrian’s Wall, Bowes Railway and the bird reserves at St Mary’s and Marsden Rock.
