The Republic of Albania is a Mediterranean country in south eastern Europe. Almost a quarter of the country’s 3.6 million population live in Tirana, the capital city. Once an ally of the Soviet Union, Albania’s communist leaders were routed in 1992 and the country has gradually stabilized. Albania’s economy remains dependent upon its agriculture, producing wheat, corn, tobacco, figs and olives.
